This paper is an account of the partial results of research in Santiago of Chile, undertaken by Prof. Lidia Contreras and Prof. A. Rabanales, as part of a wider project concerned with the study of the linguistic norm of cultured Spanish as spoken in the main urban centers in Spain in Spanish America. The general project is coordinated by Prof. Juan M. Lope Blanch. For this purpose, a questionnaire containing 4,459 terms was prepared, corresponding to an equal number of concepts. From their study of the lexicon very valuable conclusions have been drawn, in particular, its marked Spanish character; its remarkable amplitude; the relative scarcity of foreign borrowings and of indiginous terms; and the rich variety of linguistic shades in value judgements.
