Eighty-four fifth and sixth grade boys and girls and their mothers were given the What I Like To Do interest inventory. Mothers were able to perceive interests accurately in art, social studies, active play, home arts, and science. They had significantly different scores from their children for music, quiet play, and manual arts. Breadwinners' occupation and intelligence level of child did not affect ratings, but sex of child did in the active and quiet play areas. Generally, mothers tended to overestimate the interests of their children in music and quiet play and underestimate them in home arts. Where sex was a factor, mothers rated girls' interests more accurately than boys'.
