Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the linguistic considerations involved in digital approaches to working with ancient texts at various stages in the preparation and analysis of data: the creation of corpora, lemmatization and PoS (Part of Speech) tagging, and syntactic annotation and treebanking. The fragmentary and uncertain nature of much of our evidence for ancient languages, including Latin and Ancient Greek, provides particular challenges for linguists, who must take into account inconsistency and uncertainty at every stage of working with ancient linguistic data, from the creation of a corpus to syntactic analysis. Some of these difficulties are magnified by the limitations of computational methods, but digital tools can successfully overcome other problems.
