Our project is a replication of the second Pennycook et al. (2018) study that focused on determining whether prior exposure to fake news headlines will influence people's perceived accuracy of later-appearing news headlines. The original study found that a single prior exposure is enough to increase perceived accuracy of both fake and real news. Our goal, via replication, is to determine whether or not these results can be confirmed. The study will be dispersed using an online survey on Qualtrics to participants who will most likely range between the ages of 18 to 22 years-old, all being students at Missouri State University. The particular survey we are using is borrowed from the University of Alabama team's replication. Just as the original study used, we will have a 2x2x2 mixed design ANOVA, looking at familiarity ratings as well as participants' perceived accuracy. There should be little to no risk for participating in the experiment-- there are a few images that will be displayed that can be upsetting; however, participants will be debriefed prior to beginning the study and will have the option to opt out.
