Paradigms assessing conditioning and extinction of appetitive behaviours can uncover factors contributing to maladaptive appetitive conditioning, a key process underpinning eating-related, substance use, and gambling disorders. Pupillometry remains underexplored as an implicit measure of appetitive conditioning, with notable gaps in examining extinction learning. This study aimed to a) develop a task to measure conditioning and extinction of appetitive cues, and b) employ pupillometry as a psychophysiological measure. A delay-conditioning reward-learning paradigm was developed, where participants learned to associate fractal images with a pleasant or neutral liquid. Outcome measures included pupillary response, explicit contingency learning, valence ratings, and self-reported tiredness, hunger, and thirst. Three iterations of pilot testing were completed involving a convenience sample of healthy adults (n = 17; Age: 20 – 29 yrs; 70.59% female). Results showed no clear pupillary discrimination between fractal images associated with each liquid, although explicit awareness of contingencies was consistently demonstrated. The current study contributes to literature suggesting the assessment of appetitive conditioning is complex. Future research should investigate a) additional implicit measures of conditioning, b) the role of inherently rewarding stimuli, and c) managing satiation. Developing sensitive psychophysiological measures of appetitive conditioning will provide important insights into mechanisms underlying maladaptive appetitive learning.
